WWE Championship Six Pack Elimination Challenge
At one of WWE’s most prestigious pay-per-views, Night of Champions, Sheamus must defend his coveted WWE Title in a Six Pack Challenge against Raw’s top Superstars: John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, Chris Jericho and Nexus leader Wade Barrett. Just days before the event, Raw's anonymous General Manager decreed that this bout would feature elimination rules.
The rules of a Six Pack Elimination Challenge are simple: A sextet of Superstars collide in the ring, with eliminations determined via pinfall or submission. The winner is the last competitor standing.
After successfully retaining his title at SummerSlam (though Randy Orton won via disqualification), The Celtic Warrior has more than once felt the venomous wrath of The Viper. In response to this continued brutality, a frustrated Sheamus addressed the WWE Universe on Raw, urging the anonymous General Manager to deny Orton a rematch as punishment for WWE’s Apex Predator’s animalistic aggression.
Agreeing that Sheamus deserves more respect than he’s been receiving – both from Orton and from the WWE Universe – the GM let the irritable Irishman sit atop a throne for the evening to survey a series of matches. At the end of the night, he would hand-pick his Night of Champions opponent.
Sheamus tried to take advantage of the GM’s generosity, ultimately deciding to take a month-long respite from competition. However, the devious Dubliner was immediately met with a surprise announcement from the anonymous head of Raw: At Night of Champions, Sheamus will defend his title in a high-jeopardy Six Pack Elimination Challenge against deserving former World Champions – Cena, Orton, Edge and Jericho – as well as Barrett, now allowed to pursue the WWE Championship after the Raw GM lifted The Nexus’ title match ban. Now that the season one NXT winner is in the hunt for his first WWE Title, the truce between The Nexus and The Celtic Warrior is officially over.
Although a loss to John Morrison just weeks prior to Night of Champions seemed to cost Jericho his spot in this match, Raw's GM granted the first-ever Undisputed Champion an opportunity to compete for the WWE Title – if he could defeat The Hart Dynasty in a Steel Cage Handicap Match. After a hard-fought battle, Jericho bested Tyson Kidd & David Hart Smith, securing his chance to reclaim golden glory while simultaneously feeding his massive ego.
Not to be outdone on the ego front, an irate Edge has not only vowed to capture WWE Title at Night of Champions, but has also pledged to stage a "hold out" after winning Sheamus' championship until the WWE Universe and the Raw GM show him the respect he feels he deserves. If The Ultimate Opportunist wins at Night of Champions, the WWE Universe might have seen the last of him and the WWE Title for quite some time.
Will Edge have the chance to honor his promise? More importantly, can the cantankerous Celt cling to the WWE Title yet again? To find out, tune in to Night of Champions, this Sunday, only on pay-per-view.
World Heavyweight Champion Kane vs. The Undertaker
A shroud of darkness descends upon Night of Champions as World Heavyweight Champion Kane collides with The Undertaker in an epic No Holds Barred Match for the World Title and the right to be called the most dominant force of the underworld.
At SummerSlam, The Phenom reemerged from a ringside casket, making it clear to the WWE Universe that his tortured brother was the Superstar who attacked him and left him in a vegetative state on Memorial Day weekend. But, as The Undertaker looked poised to take his vengeance, The Big Red Monster struck again, executing an earth-shattering tombstone on the returning Deadman.
The next week on SmackDown, Kane revealed his master plan to bring about the demise of The Demon of Death Valley. After recognizing that The Undertaker’s pride had been weakening him for years, the horrific Superstar decided to take actions that would forever take him out of his legendary older brother’s shadow and establish himself as “the Devil’s favorite demon.”
The Undertaker returned to SmackDown the following week, proclaiming that Kane had a powerful weakness as well – envy. He claimed that no matter how many lies Kane’s sick jealously allowed him to believe, he was undeserving of carrying “his holy grail.”
The Phenom promised that when the two ominous Superstars meet, the result will always be the same. But, Kane has insisted that their monumental clash at Night of Champions will end the same way that SummerSlam did. The horrific Superstar pledged to end The Deadman’s very existence once and for all.
Just when it seemed as if the demented sibling rivalry couldn’t get any more intense, The Undertaker dropped a bombshell on SmackDown. Before the stunned WWE Universe, The Phenom proposed that his showdown with Kane at Night of Champions be a No Holds Barred Match. One week later, The Big Red Monster agreed, launching a vicious sneak attack on his older brother that culminated in an earth-shattering chokeslam-tombstone combination.
Who will emerge from the darkness with the World Heavyweight Championship in his grasp, and who will simply be left in his brother’s shadow? Find out at Night of Champions, Sunday Sept. 19 at 8/7 CT, only on pay-per-view.
United States Champion The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan
The Miz has always been vocal about his self-proclaimed “awesomeness,” particularly during his reign as United States Champion. However, Mr. Money in the Bank’s former NXT Rookie Daniel Bryan hopes to silence his one-time mentor at Night of Champions, when he challenges The “Awesome One” for the U.S. Title.
Even while paired together as Rookie and Pro on the inaugural season of WWE NXT, Daniel Bryan and The Miz didn’t exactly see eye to eye, with Daniel Bryan preferring to let his in-ring actions – not his words – do the talking as he vied to become WWE’s next breakout star. Week after week, The Miz voiced his dissatisfaction with his Rookie, sentiments echoed by WWE NXT and Raw announcer Michael Cole. It was perhaps that constant, unwarranted criticism that convinced Daniel Bryan to align himself with his fellow Rookies in The Nexus, taking part in the nefarious group’s initial Raw invasion on Viewer’s Choice Night. However, Daniel Bryan was soon ousted from The Nexus due to clashing ideals, leaving WWE in the process. The Miz couldn’t have been happier.
The WWE Universe likely thought they’d seen the last of Daniel Bryan, making his return at SummerSlam as a key member of Team WWE all the more surprising. Daniel Bryan helped Team WWE defeat his former Nexus allies, much to the chagrin of would-be Team WWE member The Miz, whose ego had only grown during Daniel Bryan’s absence. To The Miz, Daniel Bryan had stolen his rightful spot on Team WWE, along with its accompanying accolades.
With his new, like-minded NXT Rookie Alex Riley by his side, The “Awesome One” has tormented his season one Rookie at every turn. However, he’s also more than once found himself on the receiving end of Daniel Bryan’s excruciating submission maneuver, the LeBell Lock.
Can Daniel Bryan humble his former WWE Pro, earning his first WWE championship win in the process? Or will The “Awesome One” have yet another reason to gloat after delivering a Skull (and potentially spirit)-Crushing Finale to his former Rookie? To find out, tune in to Night of Champions, Sept. 19, only on pay-per-view.
Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston
At Night of Champions, Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler will put his title on the line against Kofi Kingston. If Ziggler gets disqualified or counted out, the bleach-blond Superstar’s high-flying adversary will soar away the new champion!
Dolph Ziggler captured the Intercontinental Title from Kingston, thanks in part to a distraction from SmackDown’s Official Consultant Vickie Guerrero. Though a rematch was signed for SummerSlam, a brutal attack on both Superstars by The Nexus during the match prevented a clear winner from being declared.
In back-to-back rematches on SmackDown, Ziggler managed to hold on to his illustrious title by questionable means, thanks once again to his nefarious girlfriend Vickie. In their first showdown – just when it appeared Kingston was gaining a decisive advantage – Guerrero pushed the No. 1 contender off the top rope, drawing the disqualification. One week later – when both Superstars were attempting to beat the referee’s count back into the ring – Guerrero prevented Ziggler’s reentry. Since the title can only change hands by pinfall or submission, Ziggler’s title reign survived both of the strategic loses.
To prevent further controversy from occurring at Night of Champions, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long stipulated that if Ziggler gets counted out or disqualified, Kingston will reclaim the coveted title.
Will Teddy Long’s actions finally bring a definitive Intercontinental Champion back to SmackDown? Find out at Night of Champions, Sunday, Sept. 19, at 8/7 CT, only on pay-per-view.
Big Show vs. CM Punk
At Night of Champions, Big Show will step into the ring with CM Punk, as the powerful knockout punch of The World’s Largest Athlete clashes with the full power of Straight Edge.
Big Show has pledged to eradicate CM Punk and with good reason. Punk nearly broke the gigantic Superstar’s hand with the assistance of his Straight Edge Society. Though Big Show went on to overcome The S.E.S. at SummerSlam, The Second City Saint’s early departure from the match prevented the giant from finishing the job.
After Big Show ridiculed the Straight Edge way-of-life on Monday Night Raw’s 900th episode celebration, Luke Gallows was sent forth to destroy him. However, when the “Sin-free Soldier” tapped out to Big Show’s Colossal Clutch, Punk became unhinged and executed the GTS on his own war-torn disciple! Now, with the future of The S.E.S. uncertain, Punk could be in for an enormous problem.
Though “The minister of Straight Edge” is the smaller of the two Superstars, that doesn’t mean he should be taken lightly. Punk is a two-time Money in the Bank Ladder Match winner and a two-time World Heavyweight Champion. His cunning nature is only outdone by his plentiful arsenal of dangerous maneuvers – most notably the dreaded Anaconda Vise – which helped claim a victory over the legendary Undertaker.
Will Big Show throw The Straight Edge Savior into a crooked future of pain? Find out at Night of Champions, Sunday, Sept. 19, at 8/7 CT, only on pay-per-view.
Divas Champion Melina vs. self-proclaimed "Co-Women's Champion" Michelle McCool
In what will no doubt be one of the most unique (or should we say “flawless?”) bouts at Night of Champions, Divas Champion Melina will face self-proclaimed “Co-Women’s Champion” Michelle McCool in a match that will unify the Women’s and Divas titles – a feat of such magnitude that every WWE Diva will be at ringside to witness it.
Returning from injury to capture the Divas Championship at SummerSlam, Melina has every reason to be in a celebratory mood these days. However, SmackDown’s resident “mean girls,” Women’s Champion Layla and McCool, have bullied the Latina lovely over the past several weeks with a series of verbal and physical assaults. When Team Lay-Cool revealed they had a surprise in store for Melina on Raw’s 900th episode celebration, the Divas Champ was justifiably skeptical.
Confronting Melina with a dose of their infamously candid “real talk,” Lay-Cool accused the Diva of being “forgettable,” proposing a Championship Unification Match at Night of Champions to determine the most deserving titleholder in the Divas division. Either Michelle or Layla would battle Melina, and the winner would leave Night of Champions with both the Women’s and the Divas Championships, unifying the titles for the first time in history.
Melina accepted the challenge, but given Lay-Cool’s inclination to bend the rules, the Divas Champion demanded that every WWE Diva on the roster be at ringside as lumberjills to ensure that this is indeed a fair fight – a near-foreign concept to the cunning “Co-Women’s Champs.”
But since the challenge, things may not have been so flawless in the Lay-Cool camp. Just two days before Night of Champions, the duo could not decide who would face Melina. The solution? Have newest SmackDown Superstar and WWE NXT season two winner Kaval draw names from a hat. After Michelle’s name was drawn, Layla realized every piece of paper in the hat had Michelle’s name on it. Furious, Layla vowed not to be there for Michelle at Night of Champions.
Can Melina unify the Divas and Women’s Titles? Or will Michelle bring all the glory home to Friday nights? Find out by tuning in to Night of Champions, Sept. 19, only on pay-per-view.
